GitHub Student Developer Program Sign-Up Instructions

Context

With a .edu email address, students can take advantage of the GitHub Student Developer Program, which is free and provides credit for Heroku deployments. While it is not strictly required, many groups will choose to deploy their Capstone projects with Heroku during Mod 4. Heroku is also a great resource for deploying personal projects in your portfolio in order to showcase your work to future employers. To sign up, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you have completed your sign up for your Turing.edu email address. You will need to prove that you are a student and are eligible for the credit.
  2. Add your turing.edu student email to your Populi profile.
  3. Download proof of enrollment from Populi: Go to My Profile and at the top of the screen, you’ll see actions that let you print or download enrollment verification
  4. Sign up for GitHub Student. You will need to add your turing.edu email to make the process faster and upload your proof of enrollment. Make sure you use “Turing School of Software and Design” for the “name of your school” input box.
  5. Sign up for Heroku Student by linking your GitHub to your Heroku account. This will prompt you to create a Heroku account; finish that signup first and then come back to this link to complete. You may be prompted to add valid billing information to your Heroku account in order to proceed. Go into your Heroku account and add that information. Note: if for any reason you are unable/not comfortable with this step, please reach out to your instructors.
  6. You may have to wait to be fully “approved” by any one of these companies. At that point, it’s out of our hands, but we’ve seen it be a pretty quick turnaround!

If none of these things work in a timely manner, please reach out to your instructors!
